David Leggett – 7 design questions interview
Designer – David Leggett

1. How much time do you dedicate to learning design every day?
Most of my knowledge comes from jumping into projects and getting experience as I go rather than reading books or taking lessons. It’s a sure way to make lots of mistakes, but I feel like I learn very well this way. I probably spend most of my time working on one project or another.
2. What other designers do you have contact with on a regular basis?
Lots! Isn’t everyone a designer to some degree today? I’ve met a lot of really cool people and very talented designers through blogging and social platforms like Twitter.
3. Who are the top 2-3 designers that you respect and why?
Skipping 3. Don’t think I could choose honestly!
4. What’s your favorite website or design you ever made and why?
You always are growing as a designer, and previous works constantly reveal more flaws as time passes. I’m very happy with the recent redesign of UX Booth (which was mostly designed by Andrew Maier and also a collaboration with Matthew Kammerer).

5. Have you ever been published in a book or magazine? What books or magazines?
I’ve co-authored a chapter in the Smashing Bookwith the help of Andrew Maier (in other words I provided moral support while he did all the work), and have had resources/sites shared on occasion in different magazines. Some of our brushes from Tutorial9 will be published in an upcoming Photoshop Creative Magazine. My favorite though is when I see some of our resources used creatively by other artists and designers in their own works.
Currently, I’m working with the rest of the team at UX Booth on a new book, but I’m afraid I can’t say more than that right now!
6. What’s your favorite color in hexadecimal? How often do you find yourself leaning towards it with design projects?
Ha, I don’t think there is any one color (Though I tend to lean toward blue quite a bit), but maybe
#000000 or
#FFFFFF. Using black and white highlights and shadows for fine tuning and an extra layer of polish has become a very important part of my workflow.
7. What’s your most recent project we can look at?
My current work at Tutorial9 and UX Booth has been keeping me from launching Better Blogger, a project I’ve been waiting a long time to get started. One of the interesting projects I’m working on right now though is a political campaign for a state house representative Michael Caldwell. I have no political experience, and no real marketing experience of this nature, so I’ve been learning A LOT from playing around on this project!
